Getting Married in Nature – Is It Legal?

Dreaming of saying “I do” at the top of a mountain, on the shores of the St. Lawrence River, or deep in a Québec forest? You’re not alone. More and more couples are trading traditional reception halls for outdoor ceremonies. But before you picture your dress flowing in the wind or your first kiss under the pines… one question often pops up: Is getting married in nature actually legal?

Let’s break it down — no boring legalese here — so you can dream big and keep everything legit.

Can you get married anywhere in Québec?

Yes… but not exactly anywhere.

In Québec, the law allows you to get married pretty much anywhere — as long as certain conditions are met.

So yes, you can absolutely get married outdoors — by a lake, in the woods, or at the top of a trail — as long as you respect a few key rules:

1. The location must have a civic address

To be legally recognized in Québec, your elopement ceremony must take place at a location with an official civic address. You can’t legally get married at “KM 8 of the waterfall trail” or “somewhere between two boulders.” This is often where things get tricky when couples dream of a fully wild, off-grid wedding.

But don’t worry — that doesn’t mean it’s impossible! Many natural locations do have civic addresses: cabins, refuges, designated campsites, forest inns, private estates, national or regional parks… With a bit of scouting (and help from us!), it’s totally possible to find a magical spot and keep things legal.

And what if you have a dream location that doesn’t have a civic address? You can always choose to have a symbolic elopement ceremony in the spot that sets your heart on fire, then take care of the legal part later in the day — at your Airbnb, for example (where there is a civic address). A lot of couples go this route to keep things meaningful without being tied down by legal logistics.

2. You’ll need an authorized officiant

The person who officiates your wedding must be authorized by the Directeur de l’état civil du Québec. This could be a religious officiant, a notary, a court clerk, a celebrant… or someone close to you who has applied for a one-time authorization (at least 3 months in advance).

At Love is Nord, Josée is a legally recognized celebrant. If you want her to handle the legal side of things, she’ll take care of all the paperwork with the Directeur de l’état civil — no stress for you!

3. You need two witnesses

As with any legal wedding, two witnesses must be present during the official ceremony.

That said, your witnesses don’t have to be close friends or family. Their role is simply to confirm that the wedding took place and that they understand what that means. So you can choose whoever you like — even your child, if they’re mature enough to understand the significance of their role, even if they’re under 18.

What if your dream location doesn’t have a civic address?

When you’re dreaming of getting married in the wild, the perfect emotional setting isn’t always the one that checks all the legal boxes. But here’s the good news: that doesn’t mean you have to compromise!

Many couples simply separate the two parts of the day: They handle the legal signing with witnesses at a location with a civic address (like a cabin or refuge), and then head to the wilderness for their real ceremony — the one from the heart. It’s a meaningful and stress-free way to get the best of both worlds.

Some couples sign the papers on the same day, others do it a few days before or after for logistical reasons. And no — we promise — that doesn’t make the ceremony any less real.

In fact, a lot of couples tell us afterwards that it felt even more freeing, more emotional, and more connected. Why? Because they were able to fully live in the moment, without thinking about forms or stopping to pull out documents. Just the two of them, in their bubble.

A few real-life examples of legal outdoor weddings

A legal beach wedding

A sunrise on the riverbank, two lovers saying “yes” in total intimacy with their two best friends by their side. Thanks to the civic address of the beach, the celebration was fully legal — documents signed on a tree stump!

Symbolic ceremony on a mountaintop + signing at the cabin

Some couples want the full mountain experience, so they say their vows up high, then return to a nearby cabin with a civic address to handle the paperwork. It avoids legal headaches and lets you enjoy the best of both worlds!
